Mou Chuk is a moutain in Saeng Nim, South Korea. Its name translates to “nothing is comparable” because of it’s uniqueness and beauty.

In 1950, as war was raging between North and South Korea, Joo Hyun Park, an elite Waseda University (Japan) graduate turned down a well-paid job and instead returned to his native countryside village. He built a middle school for people who couldn't afford education at the foot of Mou Chuk mountain. To him – the mountain protected the school. Every student had to climb Mou Chuk during field trips to plant and harvest fruit. The fruit were then sold and the money was used to pay for books and tuition.  During Master Park’s senior year, she climbed to the top along with her classmates where the students were met with a large fountain. Their teacher had succeeded in teaching them the lesson of what it meant to get to the top in life through focus, integrity and respect.

"Joo Hyun Park was my principal and also my father. My mother, Jung Hee, was one of the first women in her generation to go to college despite the Japanese occupation. She educated women while supporting the family alongside my father. Choosing the name Mou Chuk means honoring them for dedicating their life to education.

Today Mou Chuk still stands tall and beautiful behind Saeng Nim middle school.
Here in America, I hope Mou Chuck the name will have the same effect on my students as it had my father's."
